Since I started my current job (the first time) I've had ample opportunity to build and refine my SQL skills. I started with only the vaguest idea of the syntax, which seemed arcane at best and totally unusable at worst, and no practical experience. I was forced to learn quickly, and it has paid off because these days it seems like all I do is pull crazy statistics out of the University's data feeds. For instance, a (paraphrased) conversation I had with my boss2 a few days ago:
Boss: I need you to pull the relationship between X and Y by 2PM so I can present the data at a meeting.
Me: Umm, X and Y aren't even sort of related to one another! I'm going to have to bridge six or seven tables to make that connection.
Boss: Is that hard?
Me: <sigh> Not that hard, I suppose.
The fact that Peoplesoft has thousands of tables does not make my job any harder, as even closely-related data often requires a half-dozen inner joins to massage out (but my unbridled, passionate hate for Peoplesoft is a topic for another entry entirely).

I totally hate PeopleSoft. I also hate the fact that the State has spent (and continues spending) so much money on it. I hate that people actually quit UCF to become a PS consultant and suck tons of money from the State.

Hmm… maybe that's what I should do. “Oh, you need to know how to pull head counts? Well, for only $999.99/hour, I can show you how.”

The worst part is that UF is falling into the exact same trap. Peoplesoft is the DEVIL. I cannot agree heartily enough.

We have 8.3 why have thousands of tables unused and an Audit table so big, no one can query it. or JOB table so big, only simple queries run and complex ones time out.
for £999.00 I could build a custom App from scratch, never mind $999.00 per hour.
If you are interested UK financial orgs pay 4 year contracts @ $1million per year. loads a muny…….bosh
