Here’s a quick rundown of what I did to get my Treo 700p working as a bluetooth modem for my MacBook Pro on T-Mobile.

  • Download Ross Barkman’s Generic 3G connection scripts
  • Extract them into /Library/Modem Scripts (you can supposedly put them in ~/Library/Modem Scripts/ but that never worked for me)
  • Pair your devices. This was really simple — turn the 700p’s bluetooth on, set it to temporarily discoverable, then go to your Mac Bluetooth preferences, go to the devices tab, and “Set up a new device”. From there, just follow the directions, except when it comes time to add the phone number settings, make sure you use the appropriate APN (for me, wap.voicestream.com) instead of the phone number. Select the Generic 3G (I used the first one) script as the modem script, and voila.
  • There’s also a fun bug in the Cisco VPN client that it won’t startup to even log in as it somehow doesn’t see the network interface. Fortunately, a blog entry pointed me at the right command: sudo /System/Library/StartupItems/CiscoVPN/CiscoVPN restart
  • I still haven’t gotten the VPN working quite right, even after changing the port settings, but I’ll keep messing around with it.

No email address so hopefully you’ll come back and read my response here:

Click the “Generic 3G” link above and save the file.

Double click it in finder (if using safari you can click the magnifying glass in the download window next to the item to see it in finder)

If this doesn’t open the .sit file, you might need to install stuffit expander: http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/index.html

Once you’ve got stuff it installed, when you double click the sit file, it
if it makes a new directory called Generic3G2004-09.

Open that directory up, open the “Generic 3G” directory up, and use your mouse to select the two files Generic 3G CID1 and CID2.

Click the Edit menu up top, choose “Copy”, then back in the finder window, click “Macintosh HD”. Then open the Library folder then open the “Modem Scripts” folder. Now choose “Paste” from the Edit menu.

You can now delete the original Generic3G directories and .sit file you downloaded.

Man — I’m an idiot. You can tell I wasn’t sleeping much before I posted this. T-mobile is GSM. The 700p isn’t. Obviously one of those two was wrong — in this case, it’s the 700p. I have a 680 and no idea why I would put 700p. Oops!

[...] tidbits — first of all, I don’t have a 700p and I have no idea why that snuck into my previous post instead of 680.  [...]
