I don’t usually care much for campus politics. It’s usually an even worse example than national elections of “pick who you’d least like in office”. Not to mention for the most part that campaign platforms are trivial, banal, and the entire reputation Student Government has of being Greek led turned me off when I was a voting student.

Well, I’m happy to say that’s changed. I mean, it’s not ever day that a student government election gets covered on slashdot. If you bother to follow the links far enough, you’ll even see that I’ve endorsed Gavin. When I sent him the email, I expressed to him that I meant every single world I said in the endorsement. I’m not particularly impressed by smart people. I’m happy to say most of the people I hang out with and interact with are smart people, so it takes much more than that to impress me.

And Gavin is much more than that. When talking about him this morning in the office, one of my office mates commented that besides from being smart, informed, organized, and good at interacting with people, Gavin is genuinely nice. He’s the kind of guy who is passionate about what he believes, respectful with those who don’t agree, and really interested in making positive changes in the world. Sure, most folks wouldn’t pick intellectual property issues as important ones for saving the world, but believe it or not, those issues are only going to get more and more important. And unless have more people like Gavin, large corporations with huge IP portfolios, teams of lawyers, and a culture of restriction will replace the free culture that has enabled the innovation that got us where we are.

So if you’re a student in the College of Liberal Arts at UF, please vote this week. And if you do, I don’t think you’ll find a better candidate than Gavin.

    Staff Advisor? Oy.

Yeah, well, the technical position is faculty advisor, but when we read the Student Organization Handbook, we noticed that professional staff members counted. Now I know there are some who would question my professionalism, but fortunately HR doesn’t. ;-)

    Incidentally, congratulations Gavin for winning!
