It’s a little late I realize, but at least it’s still January. Here are some resolutions I’d like to work on this year:
- Exercise — Yeah, as if this isn’t always on my list? Well, it’s still there, and I’ll keep trying. Lately I’ve been starting on pull-ups and then adding fun variations. Doing pull-ups with my legs extended straight in front of me is fun. Interestingly enough, my legs give out first, just holding themselves straight in the air, while my arms are still going strong actually lifting.
- Writing — Last year was excellent in that I actually started doing some articles on my own. Still, I’ve always wanted to write fiction. So this year, one of my resolutions is to write a short story and get it published.
- Photography — I’ve always been impressed by people who make pretty pictures, and I’d like to learn how. I’ve got a very long way to go.
Probably it’s not your legs giving out but your stomach… While I’ve never tried that particular pull-up (and loath to do so) I’ll be it’s your abs keeping your legs elevated.
Those are good resolutions. Call them your Year of the Dog resolutions, and that way you can get away with them being a little late.

Good call! And I get a little extra Jan ‘07 to make progress on them too.
Yeah, I would think it’s mostly my abs, but I really do feel it in my quads. Which seems odd, since in most exercises that’s the muscle least likely to get stressed. I do feel the ab workout as well (one of the reasons I like the L-up as I call it) but I think there’s something about the legs too.
For a while I would start fully straight and pull up as I lifted my leg into the forward position too, but it was harder to feel exactly how the momentum from my legs was helping my pull-ups and I wanted to keep them as tough as possible so I leave the legs in that position now. One fortunate side effect s that my center of balance is shifted so my head is actually about 8 inches behind the bar as I pull above it. That’s good because my pull-up bar is at the top of a 7′ doorway and I’d knock myself out if I actually tried to do a typical chinup with my chin ending directly above the bar.
