Every now and then I get facebook invites from folks I don’t know. Or at least, ones I don’t think I know. It’s always possible it’s someone I forgot and didn’t remember. The latest person’s name looked familiar, but as I looked over her profile, I couldn’t identify why. Sure, she went to a nearby high-school from back where I grew up, but that doesn’t mean much.

Then I checked my messages and she had sent one. Turns out, this was someone I used to babysit! What a way to feel old — kids I babysat are a year off from graduating college.

It’s wierd too, I can remember what type of cable TV most folks that I babysat for had. It was my favorite perk of babysitting. Once the kids went to bed, I got to chill on the couch, watch tv, read a book, whatever. The later the parents stayed out, the more I got paid to sit on my butt.

At this particular house, I can remember there was a really good sci-fi show on late at night that we didn’t get at home (we didn’t get much of anything at home, never having cable, and having pretty poor OTA reception for years). I think it was B5. It kinda sucked though because I could never catch enough of a show to really follow it. I’d see only a couple of episodes from a season, and not see the rest.

Among the shows I remember watching while babysitting:

  • Pretender
  • Babylon 5
  • Highlander
  • X-Files

Free cable and free food and of course a bit of money was always an excellent deal I thought. Even better when the kids are a little more grown up and enjoy some of the TV I liked.
