This year Jaime and I are buying our own presents to save with the hassle. So now I have to figure out whether to get the gamecube after all or get many other smaller items. Any advice?

Should gamecube seriously be a priority? Why dont you buy something that you’ll still be using in 10 years.

Get a gamecube and NFL Street.
If I made all my purchasing decisions based on what I’d need in 10 years, I’d have some wooden bowls and a few pairs of army boots.

…I still use my SNES after ten years of ownership…
Seriously, it is hard to get stuff that you’ll still be using in ten years, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a worthy goal. It’s usually my goal every winter when my parents ask me for suggestions on what they can get for me. So, I think that is worthwhile advice.
I also suggest getting just one present. It makes it more memorable and can serve to commemorate ‘Christmas 2003,’ ‘the first Christmas in your own apt,’ or whatever you’d like it to mean.
You might also consider getting something that brings you and Jaime closer together. Stay away from the mangerie though.

Doesn’t buying your own presents take some of the fun out of it? Or do you still get each other some little surprises. I know that’s the best bit of the present giving for me. Seeing my s/o’s face as she opens my pressies

David, what is mangerie? The only thing I can think of is, perhaps, “mango lingerie,” and in that case I would certainly stay away from it, Jordan. You’ll never get the mango smell out of your sheets.
Seriously, though, why a Gamecube and not an PS2? I’m not much of a console gamer anymore, but it seems to me that if I were going to get one I’d get a PS2, just on the strength of the title selection.

John: Mangerie is a joke-term for male lingerie. It’s pretty funny when delivered in the right context. Pronunciation is the same as for lingerie only it starts with an ‘m’ sound instead of the ‘l’.
Jordan: While I expect I may have to wait ’til Christmas, please update when you make your decision(s) and let us know what you got yourself.

Get the Gamecube. And then get Gladius, Zelda, and Metroid Prime. You won’t be sorry.

Well, I went ahead and bought the gamecube; got the Zelda special edition, and target threw in a free copy of PacMan World 2 (http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-3/qid=1072100002/ref=sr_1_3/602-3404883-1021462?asin=B00005YVU2) which is itself actually two games, one of which comes with all the original versions of pacman as mini-games. So really, I got a stinking lot of free games with it, so I can add Sunshine and Street at my leisure. NFL Street because it looks fun, and I gotta support my boys fuh shore, and Sunshine because, well, I’m addicted (http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2002-08-28&res=l).

And since we’re travelling with family for Christmas, yes, I got to open it up and play with it already. Gotta love that.
TheMole: yeah, we’re still doing smaller stuff for each other, but leaving the bigger purchases to ourselves. Saves her with a lot of returns and saves me wondering if she’ll get the right thing at the right price. We’ve still got a fair amount of smaller stuff planned.
