One (maybe the only, besides the actual real world living it implies) of the advantages of not posting in a while is there’s a lot of backhistory with which to use for new posts. Typically the sorts of things I would immediately post about but instead forget slowly settle to the buttom of my mind and can be later scooped up, having decayed somewhat, but hopefully making up for in mass what it lacks in purity.

That’s the theory anyway. Of course, it helps that I’m someone who typically likes to be challenged.

On to the real deal.

Most people here know I tend to drool over gadgets, and some have even sat with me as I viewed techno pornography, over, and over with the same intensity as a serial killer planning his next fix. For a while it was fujitsu, then there was a temporary swing to the everpresent player dell and their entry. Of course, I had a real hard time justifying any such purchase, but a month ago or so Jaime mentioned that she could really use a laptop for school. This was a mixed blessing for me. You see, I could finally get a laptop that I had been lusting over for so long, but it wouldn’t be mine. Or rather it would, but only on a shared custody basis. Perhaps this was for the best.

In the end, we found an amazing deal, getting an open box, completely without anything except the warranty sharp laptop for $750. Plus, we could get it at the 1 year no interest financing. Not a bad deal after all for a super nice 3lb laptop. I got an ac adapter for $55 online, and we happily discovered it did indeed work. I was further impressed that sharp doesn’t load up their laptops with all sorts of useless software. Instead, they load a fairly bare bones system with win2k pro and not much else. One review I read complained about this, but I thought it was wonderful. One of my least favorite parts about buying a pre-built computer is all the crap it comes loaded with doing nothing but taking up space and slowing it down.

As an extra bonus there was a 10gig partition on the drive already there besides the 30gig windows one, so installing linux was super easy; blow out the extra partition, and a dual boot linux laptop was up and going in no time.

This of course frees up my drooling and desiring for different types of gadgets, but that, I think is a story for a bit later.

Man, that is a nice laptop. Of course, it’s still not your laptop, but as you said that may well be for the best.

And did I mention the keyboard actually retracts into the case when you close it? They keyboard has the deepest keystroke of any laptop I’ve ever used for that reason. Almost takes some getting used to. Really stinking slick though.

Where did you find that deal?

Yeah where did you find it? Joy is need of a new laptop. The one you got Jaime would have been perfect in size, weight, and price. Tell us all where to get one.

If I recall correctly, it wasn open box item at the local CC/BB. One or the other. An opportunity not likely to be reproduced anytime soon, at least not in any way that is advertised.

    Yup, circuit city.
