This will, in all likelihood, be my last post from inside the United States for quite some time. I leave tomorrow from Orlando quite early, first flying to San Francisco and then to Shanghai (exactly the same route that Jordan and I took over two years ago). Upon landing in Shanghai, Greg (who is another new teacher, just graduated from FSU) and I are taking a shuttle bus from Pudong International Airport to the bus station in Hangzhou. We should, barring in major complications (wings fall off?!) arrive in Hangzhou by about 9PM, China Coast Time (that’s 9AM Eastern). We should also be so useless until Thursday from extreme exhaustion, but we’ll see.

Hopefully I’ll have Internet access immediately, as all of the teachers’ apartments are supposed to be wired directly to the campus network. That would be nice, and even if it’s a little slow it should surely be better than dial-up. I am, of course, bringing my laptop, and so I should be available on e-mail as soon as I arrive.

I’m happy to report that work here is nearly finished. The room is, for all intents and purposes, clean. I still need to vacuum the car, but that won’t take long. I need to run by the bank and the insurance company, and call Cingular and my credit card company to make sure everything there is correctly cancelled. Then I’ll do my best to get some sleep, and leave on a jet plane tomorrow.

Photos of the cleaned out pad, maybe? Potentially this is the last time you’ll ever see it–when do your parents plan on heading up north, anyway?

A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct. This every sister of the Bene Gesserit knows. To begin your study of the life of John, then, take care that you first place him in his time: born in the 3rd year of the American Emperor, George II. And take the most special care that you locate John in his place: the nation of China. Do not be deceived by the fact that he was born in the US and lived his first twenty two years there. China, the country known as the Middle Kingdom, is forever his place.

    (apologies to Frank Herbert)

Is there a direct bus from Pudong airport to Hangzhou. Igo in May and after 15 hours flying, would love to by pass Shanghai and get to Hangzhou. Any directions/ info would be gratefully received!

    Thnaks and regards
